Jamaica, from the falls to the last catamaran.
Which Dunn’s River climb still leaves you an afternoon on the sand. Where the bamboo rafts actually launch. What a Blue Hole day costs once the driving is counted. Every tour on the island, reviewed and priced.
Falls, rafts and cliff dives: the Jamaica everyone comes for.
Six days carry most of the island’s bookings. Here is what each one actually involves, and the trip worth taking for it.
Almost everything in Jamaica leaves from Montego Bay.
The airport, the cruise berth and the strip of all-inclusives sit within twenty minutes of each other, so the island’s pickup lists all start here. These are the days that begin outside a Mobay lobby.
The tours Jamaica keeps selling out.

Dunn’s River is the postcard and the crowd. The Blue Hole is colder, deeper and further up the river. YS Falls is the long drive south nobody regrets. Pick by how much of the day you want to spend in a van.

Dunn’s River, hand in hand up the terraces
Six hundred feet of limestone steps with the sea at the bottom, climbed in a human chain. Go on the first bus of the morning or share it with three ships’ worth of company.
What a day out in Jamaica actually costs.
The gap between a raft trip and a private car day is most of a holiday budget, so here is the whole site grouped by what a ticket costs.
Beach clubs, foot massages on the river, town tours and the short raft runs — the everyday island.
The classic combos: falls plus tubing, catamaran plus snorkel, Nine Mile and back before dinner.
Ocho Rios stacks its best days within one river valley.
The cruise pier, the falls, the tubing put-in and the gardens sit inside a few miles of each other, which is why a ship day here works and a ship day almost anywhere else does not.
Three things Jamaica does that nowhere else does.
Waterfalls and catamarans belong to the whole Caribbean. Glowing water, a punted bamboo raft and a hilltop village of one man’s making belong to this island.

The Luminous Lagoon
Where the Martha Brae meets the sea at Falmouth, fresh water and salt water sit in a shallow warm pocket that suits one particular microorganism. Disturb it and it flares blue-white. Boats go out after full dark, cut the engine, and everyone gets in. Bright moon dulls it; a black night is the one to aim for.

Rafting the Martha Brae
A thirty-foot bamboo raft, a captain with a pole, and about ninety minutes of river through Trelawny. It was built for moving bananas and now moves visitors instead. Each raft seats two, so a big group arrives together and leaves in shifts — and there is a bar halfway where everyone catches up.

Nine Mile
Bob Marley was born in this village in Saint Ann and is buried here, in a mausoleum beside the small painted house he grew up in. The road climbs steeply off the coast and the trip takes most of a day from anywhere. Guides are usually family or neighbours, and it shows.

Negril runs on seven miles of sand and one cliff.
The beach end is flat, shallow and lined with bars; the West End is limestone cliffs with ladders into deep water. Sunset happens on the cliffs, and the whole town turns up for it.

Most of the island can be sorted at the hotel desk the night before. These four cannot: they run on darkness, small boats, one road inland and a pass that is arranged before you fly.
- 01Club Mobay Sangster Airport VIP Lounge with Priority EntryA meet-and-greet pass arranged ahead of your flight — there is no counter selling it once you are off the plane.
- 02Luminous Lagoon Night Tour from Montego BayIt only works after full dark, so the boats run one short window a night and everybody wants the same one.
- 03Jamaica Martha Brae Bamboo Rafting with Bus TransportationRafts carry two people at a time, so a group of eight is four rafts and a queue behind them.
- 04Bob Marley’s Nine Mile Admission and Guided Tour from Montego BayA long climb inland from either coast; the vans leave early and there is one run a day.
When the rain comes off the Blue Mountains, go inside.
Jamaica’s wet months are May, June, October and November, and even then it is usually an hour of hard afternoon rain rather than a lost day. The answers are indoors and unbothered: a great house on the hill, a rum estate, a spa on the river, a coffee farm in the cloud.
